About Mishawaka, IN - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Mishawaka began with the discovery of bog iron deposits in the early 19th century. Settlers arriving to mine the deposits founded the town of St. Joseph Iron Works and business prospered; within just a few years, the town had a general store, a tavern, and about 200 residents. In 1833, St. Joseph Iron Works, Indiana City, and two other neighboring towns were incorporated. The city of Mishawaka was the result. About 40 years later, a fire destroyed a great deal of Mishawaka’s business district. However, the citizens rebuilt and Mishawaka continued to grow through both manufacturing and farming. Though the weather is seasonal and bitterly cold in the winter, the soil is rich.
Mishawaka became famous as the "Peppermint Capital of the World" because of the area's rich black loam, which produced enormous quantities of mint. From 1906 to 1915, Mishawaka was the home of the American Simplex motor car’s manufacturing plant. The industry peaked in the 1940s and has experienced ups and downs but the town has always managed to maintain its reputation as a great place to live, work and play. In 2010, it was named one of Business Week Magazine’s “Best Places to Raise Your Kids. “ This has a lot to do with its lovely people, seasonal weather, and rich history.
Mishawaka, or the Princess City, lies nestled next to the winding conduit of the St. Joseph River and is beautiful in every season. But, in the warmth of the spring and summer, the natural wonders of this area are always at the tops of the locals’ to-do lists. The nearby community of Dowagiac is home to Dowagiac Woods Nature Sanctuary. It’s often called Dowagiac Woods by the locals. This 384-acre wooded wonderland is located in Cass County, Michigan and maintained and preserved by the Michigan Nature Association.
